Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
