Meteorologists are saying an icy beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Continue In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to take place, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," noted the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and clear skies. Readings are due to be low, so extra layers vital, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• People should to leave additional time for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on trains and buses.

Temperatures Expected to Plummet Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Warnings Activated

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this meant the weather was likely to cause major effects across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
