Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress After Deluge of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
