Last year, actor Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for portraying Vladimir Putin in a new film. This production, though, may align so closely with the mythologized version promoted by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a compliment instead of a critique.

The Crafted Superhero

Over a long period, the Kremlin and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to craft a made-to-measure persona of Putin. This character is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a local 007 who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a television show launched last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from disorder. Although he is called a different name, the implication is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals frequently result in buttressing this same narrative instead of debunking it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel sets out to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is presented as having been chosen by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one actually pleaded with him to take the job. The presidency was in essence a casting call with no shortage of contenders. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the state de facto.

• His list included several politicians, among them an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• Per a journalist who studied Putin’s biography, the future president simply fitted the necessary criteria: obedient, from the security services, and politically neutral.
• A businessman familiar with the events said the key criterion was manageability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the image of him as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his “recruitment work” in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a low-level clerk not involved with actual agent work.

Curiously, the shift to depicting him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by the actor's arrival as 007. His harder version led local outlets and online audiences to draw visual parallels with their leader. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with his surfaced on city centers, fueling the increasing trend to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an star popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who remains unseen directly. He is hinted at through photographs or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
